Turnkey & box build

Turnkey EMS: from bare board to boxed product

Six stages through one gate: design and DFM support, PCB fabrication, tooling, injection moulding and sheet metal, component sourcing, PCBA production, and final assembly with export packing. Nine SMT lines and 4–5 DIP lines run in our own plant rather than being stitched together from subcontractors.

What we take on

Six stages, and the deliverable at each one

A turnkey quotation only means something if the boundary is written down. This is where our scope ends and where yours begins, stage by stage. the deliverable column is what you receive, not what we do.

01 02 03 04 05 06 Design & DFM PCB fab Tooling Sourcing PCBA Box build Gerber and stackup bare boards, E-test mouldings, sheet metal BOM and alternates PCBA and test reports packed unit, export docs one purchase order, one quality system, from the first Gerber to the sealed carton

01 Design & DFM

Gerber, BOM and pick-and-place reviewed by an engineer before quoting: drill, annular ring, panelisation, paste apertures and the stackup are checked and returned as a written DFM report. Deliverable: a released Gerber set and the stackup drawing.

02 PCB fabrication

1–58 layers laminated in-house, 0.4–3.2 mm thick, to 600 × 1200 mm, with impedance held to ±10% as standard. Deliverable: bare boards with electrical test and the coupon record.

03 Tooling and metalwork

Enclosure tooling, injection moulding and sheet metal are arranged as part of the same programme, so the board outline and the mechanics are not two separate conversations. Deliverable: mouldings and sheet-metal parts to the approved drawing.

04 Component sourcing

The BOM is bought from authorised distribution by default, with lifecycle status checked at quotation and every substitution proposed in writing. Deliverable: a kit with date-code traceability and material declarations.

05 PCBA production

SMT and DIP assembly, selective soldering, cleaning, coating and test on nine SMT lines and 4–5 DIP lines. Deliverable: assembled and tested boards with ICT/FCT records.

06 Box build and packing

Final assembly, cable harnesses, labelling, function test at unit level and dry-pack export packing. Deliverable: the boxed product with CoC, packing list and the documents your customs broker asks for.

Who buys the parts

Three ways to run the material

The commercial model decides who carries the working capital, the obsolescence risk and the customs value. All three run on the same lines at the same quality gates, with no MOQ, one piece or ten thousand.

Customer-supplied component kit laid out in trays beside a bare PCB panel on an ESD bench

1 pc and up

Consignment, you supply the material

You ship the kit; we fabricate the boards, assemble, test and pack. Customer-supplied material is booked in against your asset account with a dated reconciliation, and shortages are reported before the line stops rather than after.

Best when you already hold the stock

Mixed reels and component trays staged for a partial-turnkey build on the SMT line

Split by BOM line

Partial turnkey, we buy the hard lines

We take the lines that carry the schedule risk: multilayer laminates on a 6–8 week lead, ceramic capacitors at 20–50+ weeks and automotive microcontrollers at 52+ weeks. You supply the rest. The split is fixed in writing line by line before the first order.

24 h quotation

Full turnkey, we buy the whole BOM

One purchase order covers fabrication, sourcing, assembly, coating, box build and export packing. Sourcing runs through a pool of 5,000+ approved suppliers on authorised distribution channels, with no broker or open-market purchasing without your written approval.

Best when you want one invoice and one gate

BOM risk

The part that decides whether the schedule holds

Material is where turnkey projects slip. The rule we work to is that the sourcing decision is documented before it is made, not explained after it causes a delay.

  • BOM management and version control. One controlled BOM revision per build. Every line carries manufacturer, part number, package and approved sources, and any change is issued as a new revision rather than a verbal instruction.
  • 5,000+ approved suppliers. Sourcing defaults to authorised distribution. No broker or open-market sourcing happens without the buyer's written approval, and anything bought that way is declared with its source and date code.
  • Obsolescence and long-lead mitigation. Lifecycle status is checked when the quotation is prepared, not when the order arrives. In 2026 that matters: standard FR-4 copper-clad laminate runs 6–8 weeks, ceramic capacitors 20–50+ weeks, automotive microcontrollers and FPGAs 52+ weeks.
  • Alternates with a written comparison. A proposed substitute arrives with a parameter comparison against the original and, where it matters, a sample for your bench test. Nothing is substituted on our own authority.
  • Traceability to date code and lot. Component lots are recorded against the board serial number, and RoHS/REACH material declarations ship with the lot so the file closes without an email chain.

Conformal coating and potting

Pick the film by the environment

Four coating materials and two potting systems, all applied selectively to IPC-CC-830B so that connectors, test points, terminal blocks and press-fit holes stay serviceable. Depth and cure settings live in the process file for the assembly, not in a marketing table.

Coating and potting options, thickness range and where each is used
MaterialThicknessUsed whereNotes
Acrylic25 – 75 µmGeneral indoor assembliesThe easiest scheme to rework; the usual first specification
Silicone50 – 210 µmWide temperature swing, outdoor housingsThickest film of the four; keeps flexibility across the range
Urethane25 – 75 µmSolvent and chemical exposureChosen where cleaning agents or process chemistry reach the board
Parylene5 – 50 µmHigh-impedance and RF surfacesThinnest film; used where coating must not disturb connector fit
Epoxy pottingSet in the process fileFull encapsulation of a power or sensor moduleAdds mechanical support as well as environmental sealing
Polyurethane pottingSet in the process fileEncapsulation that keeps some complianceFor assemblies that expand against a metal housing

On the coating line

Selective coating, so the connectors stay solderable

Coating is a programme on a machine, not a dip. The Nordson Select Coat SL-940 applies the film along a path defined per board, with masking and local protection where the assembly has to remain serviceable.

  • Programmed paths per board, with masking and local protection at connectors, test points and press-fit holes.
  • Ultrasonic and DI-water cleaning before coating, so the film bonds to a clean surface rather than sealing in flux residue.
  • Visual re-inspection after coating, checking coverage, a covered test point and mask integrity before the board is packed.

Box build

Four stages after the board is tested

Box build is the stage most quotations leave vague. Ours is four defined operations, each with its own record, ending in a sealed dry-pack carton.

Enclosure assembly station where a coated PCBA is fitted into a sheet-metal housing

Stage 1

Enclosure assembly

Board to chassis, standoffs, thermal interface, gaskets and fasteners torqued to the drawing, with the unit serial number applied and recorded.

Cable harness assembly bench with cut lengths, crimped terminals and labelled wires

Stage 2

Cable and harness

Cut, crimp, label and continuity-test harnesses built to your drawing, so the unit ships with the interconnect rather than leaving it to the installer.

Sheet-metal parts stacked beside a formed bracket and a punched enclosure panel

Stage 3

Sheet metal and hardware

Brackets, panels and mounting plates produced to the approved drawing and checked against the first article before the batch is accepted.

Finished units packed in moisture-barrier bags with desiccant and an export carton ready to seal

Stage 4

Final test and packing

Unit-level function check, labelling, accessories, then dry-pack: metallised static-shielding bag, moisture-barrier bag, desiccant and humidity indicator card.

Export and documents

What leaves with the carton, and how it leaves

Turnkey only works if the shipment clears customs without a follow-up email. Documents are prepared per lot, packing is specified for moisture and static, and the freight mode is chosen against weight and volume rather than habit.

  • Documents with every lot. Certificate of conformity, ICT and FCT test reports, packing list, commercial invoice and RoHS/REACH material declarations, filed against the lot number.
  • Dry-pack export packaging. Metallised static-shielding bag, moisture-barrier bag, desiccant, humidity indicator card and a dry-pack label carrying the MSL level and the seal date.
  • Moisture floor life. MSL 3 parts carry a 168 h floor life after the bag is opened; a saturated MSL 3 part with a body of 1.4 mm or less is rebaked for 9 h at 125 °C.
  • Four freight modes. Express air under 45 kg, air freight from 45 to 150 kg, sea LCL above 1 CBM, and sea FCL for full containers, with door-to-door available on any of them.
  • Incoterms 2020. FOB Shenzhen for sea freight, FCA Shenzhen Airport for air, plus CIF, EXW and DDP. Under DDP the buyer remains the importer of record.
  • Classification and origin. Bare PCB classifies as HS 8534.00; an assembled PCBA is classified by function (8537.10, 8538.90 or 8517.62, among others) and not as 8534. Non-preferential and FTA/RCEP certificates of origin are available.

Your design, your property

The agreement that has to be signed first

Nobody sends a real Gerber set to a supplier they have not papered. Ours is the NDA, non-use, non-disclosure and non-circumvention, and it is signed before files move in either direction.

  • NDA. Non-use, non-disclosure and non-circumvention: we will not use your design for anyone else, will not disclose it, and will not approach your customers, your distributors or your suppliers with it.
  • Isolated project data. Customer Gerbers, BOMs and drawings sit in a project directory with access limited to the engineering and production staff assigned to that programme.
  • Your material is your asset. Consigned components, tooling and fixtures are booked to your account and reported with a dated reconciliation, so the balance is verifiable rather than assumed.
  • Export-control-aware procedures. Documented denied-party screening runs on every order before release to production, and end-use information is recorded with the order file.
  • No parallel sales. We do not sell your design, your product or a variant of it to any other buyer, and we do not hold stock of it beyond the quantities your programme requires.
